How to Read Your Pulse

How to Read Your Pulse

The pulse of a pregnant women will be strong and slippery.  It is usually felt more on the left side than the right.  It can be very difficult to tell the difference of the pulse of a menstruating women or one who is about to be.  I have heard from women who tell me their Acupuncturist thought they were pregnant and then the started their period.  Easy mistake to make because they are so very simular.  Even though I believe I can feel the difference, I usually caution my patients that it could go either way and not to get their hopes up until the bbt chart stays above the cover line for 18 days.  I have found it is better to not get someones hopes up.

If you would like to be able to start reading your own pulse, you can.  Your index finger should go in the first position, then middle finger in second and ring finger in the third.  So you have to place the wrist of the left hand into the right hand and wrap your fingers around the wrist.  Leave only the 3 fingers along the pulse, and just touch it lightly, then a little harder, and a little harder.  This way you are feeling the pulse at the  exterior level, middle, and deep level.  It takes a lot of practice, but if you start doing it everyday, you will feel your pulse change.

Feeling the pulse change is very interesting.  Just make sure to feel it first thing when you wake up in the morning, then again if you are rushing around, maybe when you are stressed and again when you are relaxed.  This way you will soon know how your pulse really feels.  Then you will be able to feel the difference of a pregnancy pulse.  You will feel a rolling pulse of menstruation, or a rolling pulse of allergies.

Sometimes I see patients who are able to conceive, but then they miscarriage.  In Eastern Medicines it is recommended that a women waits about 6 months before trying to conceive again.  The theory behind this is to give plenty of time to replenish the body, and to nourish her body back to health.

When I see these women’s bbt charts I often notice that after ovulation, their basal body temperature drops below the cover line.  This indicates  that there is a imbalance in her body, and her kidney yang is deficient.  The kidney yang is what helps to build a healthy uterine lining.  When the kidney yang goes up and down, I have found that often means her progesterone is fluctuating up and down.  Sometimes she will have break through bleeding after ovulation, which in turn causes her to miscarraige.

Sometimes progesterone cream can be used, but is often not strong enough.  There are some great kidney yang tonics which I give my patients.  It is amazing to watch their bbt chart change.  They stop the spotting after ovulation and often conceive and carry the baby to full term.

In Eastern Medicine we also offer herbs to replensish the womens blood after a miscarraige.  After all she does lose a lot of blood during a misscarraige, and needs to be in the best shape possible before conceiving again.

Couples coming into my office have been diagnosed with infertility for unkown reasons.  You would really think as much time, money and research that we would know why a women cannot conceive.  It is such a difficult, stressful time in a couples life.  Yet, we have found that stress causes infertility.  What does one do?

Here are somethings that I find help -  Meditate, find relaxation time, have dates with your husband, find things you enjoy doing, exercise, eat healthy, cut out bad carbs., add lots of fresh fruits and veggies.

Diagnosed with PCOS?  Try Castor Oil Packets on your abdomen.  20 min. a day while in your period.  Put the castor oil on a piece of material, or old towel, put another damp hot towel on top of the castor oil.

Try Acupuncture.  It really helps lower your stress level.  Improves fsh, increases the blood flow to the uterus, and just makes you feel great.  Look for a Acupuncturist who has you keep a bbt chart.  Using a bbt chart you can tell so much about what is going on with your cycle.

Need help reading your bbt chart?  Email it to me — katiemc@ancientartsaustin.com  I will be happy to see what I think.  I am a Acupuncturist in Austin, Texas.  I see men and women everyday who have been diagnosed with infertility.

In Eastern Medicine the liver plays a very important function.  The liver must be soft, it must cleanse our blood, and supply our blood.  How many of you thought about this when you were going to parties in college?  When the liver becomes dry and hard it does not function as the liver is meant to.

I find it really sad that here in the US we don’t learn about taking care of our bodies to prevent illness, yet tons and tons of money is spent on pills to mask the symptoms of our body.

Eating healthy can help replenish the liver.  Taking milk thistle can help cleanse the liver.  Taking the herbal formula Xiao Yao Wan can help calm, relax and nourish the liver.

Learning meditation to calm the mind can help nourish the liver.  Learning to stay happy, and not let your emotions get out of hand, can nourish the liver.

Liver qi stagnation is one of the most common problems I see in women who have been diagnosed with infertility.  How do you know if you have liver qi stagnation?  Go to a Acupuncturist, they can tell by your pulse, tongue, and symptoms you have.  That is the best way to make sure you are taking the best formula for you.  If you have pms symptoms, cramping, clotting, breast tenderness, you probably have liver qi stagnation.
