Most of the time when women come into my office, they have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility. Although many of these women have not had all the test to confirm that diagnoses, there is nothing obvious so they just get the unexplained diagnoses.

In Oriental Medicine we look for patterns such as:
1. Is the patients body hot or cold?
2. Does the patient have blood stagnation or not?
3. Does the patient have spleen qi deficiency?
4. Does he/she have yin or yang deficiency?
5. Or perhaps blood deficiency?

The same type of diagnoses can be made for male infertility.

Your question is how does this effect me, or is there anything I can do about this?

The answer is yes. Warming or cooling the body with acupuncture, diet and herbs is very effective. Herbs to increase the yin or yang, blood or qi are equally as effective.

In the last year what I have seen the most of is Kidney yang deficiency. Which in Western terms would mean low progesterone. Why is this? Maybe our diets, perhaps medications that we are taking.
Maybe just a lot of stress.

Can Acupuncutre and Herbs help with this? Yes, it can.

How do you know it working? Keep a basal body temperature chart, you will see the change for yourself.

Women come to me all the time who have either already gone through IVF several times, or considering IVF.  They wonder if they made the right decision, or not.

My questions to these patients are —

1.  Have you changed your diet to a fertility friendly diet?

2.  Are you working on reducing your stress level?

3.  Do you exercise?

4.  What is your age?

5.  Have you kept a basal body temperature chart to see if your body is doing what is suppose to do?

Depending on these answers I give them my thoughts.  My thoughts are based on what I have learned, and what I have experienced with other patients.  So often, when women come in for acupuncture, change their eating habits, exercise, and understand that pregnancy often occurs when their bodies are working as they should they conceive.  Sometimes they do not.  But, why not try the natural way first.  Why take all the drugs to make your body do something, it is perfectly capable of on its own.

It is always up to the couple what they feel the best about.  Acupuncture has been shown to improve the fertility rate while going through IVF.  Acupuncture has been shown to help couple conceive on its own.  It is really a personal decision.  But, I am always willing to share with couples what I have learned and experienced.

It doesn’t seem that most Western Medicine Physicians are interested in the BBT chart. Althought there are some that are. Personally, I have learned that the BBT chart can give you alot of very good information as long as it does not stress you out. What I do is just have my patients email me their temperatures daily, so they are not looking at the charts and over analyzing. At anytime they wish to see their charts I email it to them, but it puts the burden more on myself and they are a little less stressed.I guess the BBT chart just does not help most Physicians in their treatment process. But with Eastern Medicine, it is important to know all the symptoms, the tongue, pulse and to see the temperatures. It can tell us if you have a yin or yang deficiency, a blockage, if you are ovulating, if you have enough progesterone, if you cycles are the correct length, etc.
